The 2014 World Cup was an event that allowed lesser known players to stand out and showcase their abilities at the biggest stage of all and it was indeed what players such as: James Rodriguez, Keylor Navas and other performers managed to do. The Colombian attacker James Rodriguez made such an impressive display at the World Cup that he was signed by Real Madrid for a price in the region of €80 million.
Luis Suarez also had the chance to prove to the world that he not only has the skills needed to almost single handedly push a club to success (which is what he almost did with Liverpool in the previous Premier League season) but he can also make a huge difference at the international stage for his country as Uruguay managed to escape the group stages with Luis Suarez turning into the top goal-scorer for his country during these rounds of the event as he scored 2 goals against England which was just enough for Uruguay to claim the vital victory.
Uruguaylater went on to play againstItalyandUruguaycame out with the very surprising victory with a lonely goal arriving from Diego Godin. This goal gaveUruguaythe points that the team of Oscar Tabarez needed to advance to the next rounds of the tournament where they would later play againstColombiaand ultimately lose 0-2.
DuringUruguay’s match againstItaly, Luis Suarez bitted Giorgio Chiellini which led to theBarcelonaman having to serve a punishment of 4 months without being able to do anything related to football activities as well as facing a 9 game international ban.
Suarez tried to appeal to this ban but it could not be overruled as the Uruguayan attacker will not be able to perform for 8 league matches and 3 Champions League games in his new club,Barcelona. He will however be allowed to train and take part in Barcelona’s last pre-season friendly match against the Mexican club Leon which will is scheduled to kick-off on August 18.
